Macular Degeneration

This time I have a question. How many people out there are using Lucentis, the Ranibizumab Injection for Wet Macular Degeneration (AMD)? What have been the results? Are there any of you who have reversed the vision loss or improved their vision? Did you insurance pay for the shots ($2000 a shot)?
I have just been reading some amazing "Personal Accounts of treatment with Lucentis," that I found by googling. One woman, named Barbara went from a 20/200 to a 20/60 after two injections. This is probably an exception because it can take much longer to see improvement.
Several weeks ago, and almost without warning my husband had trouble seeing out of his left eye. Straight lines and faces appeared wavy. It was then he was diagnosed with AMD and received his first shot of Lucentis. He says his brain has not yet adjusted to seeing clearly out of one eye and wavy out of the other.
Many people with Macular Degeneration have high blood pressure and arteriosclerosis. My husband is on medication for both. Exercise and the proper diet can help decrease blood pressure and hardening of the arteries. In my 30's I constantly fought high blood pressure. It wasn't until I started a regime of daily exercise and changed my diet that my blood pressure became normal. I gave up eating sugar, meat, most dairy products and consumed lots of vegetables. I eat a grapefruit for breakfast each morning.
I have a Ph.D. in Holistic Nutrition and make green drinks for my husband using spinach, kale, celery, carrots, tomato, and parsley, but not as often as I now wish I had done. Dr. Balch recommends, lutein, bilberry, Co Q 10 and beta carotene.
If you are having vision problems, get help immediately. Lower your blood pressure. Eat healthy fats (fish oil,Olivie oil, avocados are loaded with lutein), and add blueberries that you eat in the morning.

Health Dangers from Campfires

We chose Moon Lake To experience the wilderness last week, although we slept in a rustic cabin. How I had looked forward to this trip. There is nothing as pristine as the clean, cool air in the High Uintah Mountains in Utah. The hundred mile range receives over 500 inches of snow annually. It is a scenic, alpine view of grassy meadows sprinkled with wild flowers, mountain peaks, over a thousand lakes, and many cold clear streams.
From the front porch of the cabin we could see Moon Lake, tall log pole pines, and quakening aspen. While morning and evenings are cool the cabins heat up in the day without air conditioning, but cool off as the breeze blows through open windows.

The cabins are about 30 feet a part, so imagine my dismay when the campers next to us started a daytime camfire and the smoke drifted through our cabin windows. I have asthma so we closed all the windows and hiked to Duck Creek which is one of the outlet streams that flows into Moon Lake and there are no campsites.

From Duck Creek we drove to various streams that are South of Moon Lake. I have a passion for sitting in the shade by a babbling Brook or a rushing stream. We returned to the cabin and again hiked to Duck Creek and up the trail that leads around the East side of Moon Lake when it started to rain. We made it back to the cabin before it started to hail--one inch of hail in ten minutes. After the storm, the camfires started again and burned until after 2 a.m. I had some difficulties breathing even though the windows were closed. The cabins are not airtight.
Campfires are supposed to be romantic, charismatic, and so fun to roast marshmallows. As a child I loved campfires. So what's wrong with me other than having a difficult time breathing? Why the humbug?
Campers sitting around a campfire can move away from the smoke, but neighors sitting in a log cabin have to endure it.
The contents of that fire are more dangerous than people think. In an article on BurningIssues.org, Ken Cott sites the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency who estimate that wood smoke is 12 times more carcinogenic than equal amounts of tobacco smoke and stays active in the body 40 times longer.
Children appear to be at the greatest risk of health conditions such as respiratory infections and acute bronchitis

Letter from a friend.

Dear Patty.
I attended your class in October and the next day I went on the alkaline diet. I mixed up salad greens in apple juice and drank those. All the fibromyalgia pain left. I am on my 7th week of eating vegan. I feel so much better. I am grateful for your class thank you so much. I wanted to let you know how well I was doing. Everytime I start hurting I drink a green drink made out of salad greens and water now as the apple juice really cleaned me out. Now, I can put an apple in it and that doesn't give me cramps.

Weight Loss on an Alkaline Diet

By Patty Butts, Ph.D.

“We are not overweight, we are overly acidic.”

Author of The pH Miracle for Weight Loss, Dr. Robert Young, claims we are not overweight, we are overly acidic. When the body is overly acidic, the acidity starts to damage our organs and in order to protect the organs, the body goes into preservation mode and says STORE FAT. The body shuttles excess acids into fat cells so they can’t harm vital cells, and in turn, the metabolism slows down in order to generate more fat cells to protect the body. “This makes losing weight virtually impossible,” Young says.
Fortunately there is hope. It all boils down to breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The secrets of losing weight include keeping your body hydrated with alkaline water, eating whole, natural unprocessed foods, and building your diet around green vegetables, healthy fats, exercise, and preparing your self emotionally.
Of course you can eat other vegetables, but green vegetables are an excellent source of alkaline salts and help neutralize acids in the blood and tissues. When acids are neutralized, there is no reason for the body to store fat. Green vegetables produce chlorophyll which helps the blood cells deliver oxygen throughout the body and reduces the binding of carcinogens to DNA in the liver and other organs. Also, they are loaded with fiber, vitamins, minerals and micronutrients.
One caution about raw green vegetables, if you are on coumadin or other statin drugs that thin the blood, you need to check with your doctor before changing your diet.
The most important single measurement to your health is the pH of your blood and tissues—how acidic or alkaline it is. The body will go to great lengths to maintain a very narrow pH range of 7.365, which is mildly basic or alkaline. The pH level of our internal fluids affects every cell in our body. The entire metabolic process depends on an alkaline environment. Chronic overacidity corrodes body tissue and will interrupt all cellular activities from the beating of your heart to the neural firing of your brain. An acid balance builds cholesterol plaques, stores fat, and leaches calcium from bones or magnesium from the heart muscles—all in an attempt to protect itself from acid damage.
Several years ago while my husband and I were on a mission in Tampa, Florida I was diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue (CFIDS) for the third time. My body was still carrying the additional twenty pounds I gained with my first bout with CFIDS, which lasted over four years. At the time, my doctor wanted to give me medical disability because I was so ill. I tried all kinds of weight loss programs, but could not lose the added pounds.
Sister missionaries introduced me to Young’s book, “The pH Miracle,” and the alkaline diet. When I started on the alkaline diet, I drank “greens,” ate a whole avocado everyday, and in the first month I lost ten pounds, and my health improved rapidly. Within the first week I had energy, the depression lifted, I could sleep at night, resume my activity, and started walking. Within a few months I lost another ten pounds and have kept the weight off and remained healthy.
In a controlled twelve week study, Young had 27 participants who lost an average of 50 pounds apiece. At the same time they decreased body fat and increased muscle mass. All experienced other improvements in their health including lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, normal blood sugar levels, improved libido, improved muscle tone, less depression, indigestion and pain. My friend tried the diet, and within two months lost 38 pounds.
Normal body functions require an alkaline reserve as well as the correct pH in the blood and tissues. To ensure these conditions, a proper dietary ratio of 80% alkaline to 20% acid foods—four parts alkaline to one part acid—is required especially when there is yeast or fungus overgrowth in the body. The goal is to create the proper alkaline balance within your body by eating 80% alkaline foods—green vegetables—like cucumbers-avocados, kale, spinach, broccoli, any sprouts--especially broccoli sprouts, zucchini, asparagus, celery, and dark lettuce.
I like to fill warm Ezekiel sprouted tortillas full of sprouts, romaine lettuce, hummus, avocados, tomatoes, Bermuda onion and then use wax paper to roll it into a wrap. You can add pine nuts, pecans, sun dried tomatoes, or any vegetables you want.
According to Young, the first step in a weight loss program is to hydrate by drinking 1 liter of “green” alkaline water for every 30 pounds of body weight. The body uses water to neutralize and dilute excess acid and other toxins, and wash them out of the body through urine, sweat, and the bowels. Your blood is 90 percent water—you are what you drink. To make a green drink, Young recommends using 1 liter of distilled water, 2 teaspoons of baking soda (if you have high blood pressure use sodium chlorite or sodium silicate) and 1 teaspoon of green powder (which could be a green barley or blend of grasses). Distilled water is more alkaline and does not contain chlorine or other impurities.
It is important to chew your food carefully because the digestive process begins in the mouth as you chew. Chewing speeds up the metabolic process and aids enzymes to do their work. The ideal is to chew your food long enough to convert it to a liquid consistency in the mouth.
Foods to avoid on an alkaline diet because they are highly acidic are meat, sugar (use stevia as a sugar substitute), soda pop, dairy products, vinegar, white flour, and caffeine. Increase the amount of raw food you eat, cut out yeast, use brown rice instead of white rice, and eat only low-sugar fruits—lemon, limes, grapefruits, avocados, and tomatoes. Use soy, rice, or almond milks. Soak almonds overnight (this starts a sprouting process), and you can eat pine nuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Do use quinoa, buckwheat, soba noodles, and millet. Find new and exciting recipes and consider including tofu, veggie crumbles, or veggie burgers.
Some of you may not be ready to give up meat or dairy entirely, but remember meat
and dairy are some of the most acidic foods you can eat. Fish, particularly, salmon, chicken and turkey are less acidic than red meat, although still acidic .Try to buy organic meats whenever possible.
Dr. T. Colin Campbell, who has been called the Einstein of nutrition, in his book The China Study, writes, “We now have a deep and broad range of evidence showing that a whole foods, plant-based diet is best for cancer.” But, he doesn’t stop there; he includes heart disease, diabetes, obesity, autoimmune diseases, kidneys, bones, eyes and brains. His message is to eat meat sparingly.
Wheatgrass and barley grass are not only good for you, but they are an excellent source of protein—more than meat, poultry, fish or eggs, Young says. “Wheat grass contains more than a hundred nutrients, including every identified and trace mineral and all the B vitamins, including B12 , which is usually considered to be available only from animal sources. Barley grass has seven times more vitamin C than oranges and four times as much thiamine as whole wheat flour—thirty times as much as milk.”
Both barley and wheat grass are rich in vitamins. Grasses help balance blood sugar levels. In his book, The pH Miracle for Diabetes, Young writes, just 3 ounces of juiced wheat or barley grass in a liter of distilled water will normalize blood sugar in fifteen minutes. In addition, grasses are natural buffers of metabolic acids.
When juicing fresh barley and wheatgrass, I add distilled water, celery, spinach, and a little ginger root.

Diabetes

This is a guest blog today by Patricia Harris

If You Really don't Prevent Diabetes Now, You'll certainly Hate Yourself Later

Type 2 diabetes is a very common kind of diabetes. Many Americans seem to have been told they have type 2 diabetes, and much more are unaware they may be at high risk. Some groups have a relatively higher risk for developing diabetes type 2 than others.

Type 2 diabetes is more common in African Americans, Latinos, Indigenous Americans, and Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians
as well as other Pacific Islanders, along with the aged population.

In type 2 diabetes, either our body won't produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is needed for your
body to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, our body reduces all the sugars and starches into glucose, that is certainly the essential fuel for any cells in your body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into your cells. When glucose accumulates in your blood instead of going into cells, it can lead to diabetes complications.

You have the capability to increase and protect your overall health. With proper nutrition and workout and also making good way of life
choices (like not smoking), you can feel better, stronger, and healthier, and will lower your risk of diseases like cancer,
diabetes, cardiovascular disease and stroke.

What exactly is Healthy Weight?
There's a simple way to find out if your current weight puts you at risk for developing serious diseases. Visit www.diabetes.org/bmi
and consider the Body Mass Index (BMI) test. The final results can help you decide if you need to give consideration to your weight.

The Better You consume, The Better You Feel

Here are some basic guidelines that can help you and your family make healthier food decisions.

* Eat numerous fruits and vegetables.

* Choose whole fiber foods over processed grain products.

Try brown rice rather than white. Substitute wheat grains bread for white.

* Eat fish 2 รข€“ three times a week.

* Select leaner cuts of meat like those that end in "loin."

* Remove the skin from chicken and turkey.

* Eat non-fat dairy

* Drink water and calorie-free non-carbonated beverages.

* Use liquid oils for cooking instead of solid fats.

* Reduce junk food like chips, cookies, cakes, and regular ice cream.

Find baked chips and reduced calorie snacks. Or have a bit of fruit instead.

* Be careful about your serving sizes. Even a lot "healthy" food might cause weight gain.

Tips:

* Compare labels of similar foods, then select the one with smaller amounts of saturated fats, cholesterol and sodium.

* Adults should consume below 2400 mg. of sodium per day. If you have hypertension, it's best to target even less.

* Try adding spices and herbs within your cooking to take the place of salt for enhancing flavor.

Just a little Physical exercise Goes further

Something that gets you up and moving will work for you. Here's what it might do:

* Reduce your risk of developing diabetes type 2

* Lower your risk of heart problems and stroke Lower high blood pressure and cholesterol

* Reduce blood glucose (sugar) levels in case you have diabetes, which will reduce your risk of developing diabetes-related complications

* Reduce stress * Help you lose weight

* Provide you with more energy

* Assist you to sleep better

* Build stronger bones and muscle mass

Its not necessary to go to a gym, play sports or use fancy equipment.

Of course, you should speak to your physician prior to starting any exercise regimen.

In case you have Diabetes.

Maintaining a healthy diet and staying active are even more important when you've got diabetes.

Well-balanced meals might help keep your glucose (sugar) level as near to normal as possible.

Being active also helps you lower your blood glucose. In case you increase your level of physical activity, you may be able to

take less insulin or diabetes pills. If you're very inactive, have heart disease or perhaps history of foot ulcers, talk to your doctor about safe exercise for yourself.

Check your blood glucose before exercising. If it's under 100 mg/dl, eat some fruit, crackers or have a glass of milk or juice.

Check it again after exercising to learn how your blood glucose reacts to physical exercise. Bring a snack if you'll be active for a couple hour.

Dangers of MSG

I've just been reading an article by Dr. Joseph Mercola on the dangers of MSG. It can be linked to obesity, eye damage, depression, headaches, fatigue, disorientation, and depression. It took me back to my doctoral classes when I read Dr.Russell Blaylocks' book "Excitotoxins-the taste that kills."
Blaylock explains that MSG is an exitotoxin, which means it overexcites your cells to the point of distress to causing brain damage to varying degrees. Potentially, it can trigger or worsen learning disabilites, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.
It been estimated that up to 40 percent of the population may be sensitive to MSG.
MSG is used in crackers, meats, canned soups, salad dressings, frozen dinners, or in most restuarants and the majority of processed foods. It is more than just a seasoning, such as salt and pepper. It enhances the flavor of foods. Chemically, MSG is 78 percent glutamic acid, 21 percent sodium, and up to 1 percent contaminants.
Studies have shown that the body uses glutamate, and amino acid, as nerve impulse transmitter in the brain and other parts of the body, such as the heart.
According to Blaylock, when an excess of food borne excitotoxins, such as MSG,
hydrolgyzed protein, soy protein, natural flavorings, sodium caseinate, and aspartate, are consumed, these glutamate receptors are over-stimulated producing cardiac arrhythmias. When magnesium levels are low, as seen in athletes, the glutamate receptors are so sensitive that even low levels can result in cardiac arrhythmias and in some cases death.

In 1959, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) labled MSG as "Generally Recognized as Safe" (GRAS), but ten years later a medical conidtion known as "Chinese Restuarant Syndrome,"described the side effects after eating MSG. These ranged from numbness to heart palpitaions. Today that syndrome is called "MSG Symptom Complex," which the FDA describes as "short term reactions" to MSG. The FDA adds these symptoms of numbness, burning sensation, tingling, chest pain, difficulty breathing, headache, weakness, drowsiness.
If a food is processed, you can assume it contains MSG. Here is a partial list of ingredients that contain MSG. Yeast extract, yeast food, yeast nutrient, autolyzed yeast, Calcium caeinate, gelatin glutamate, textured protein, monsodium glutamate, sodium casenate, and soy sauce.
These ingredients often contain MSG or create MSG during processing. Powered milk, citric acid, corn starch, pectin, anything protein or enzyme modified, or anything ultra-pastuerized, whey protein, and corn starch.
Avoid this toxin by eating a whole foods fresh food diet.

Love Notes to My Husband

In the whirlwind of our lives, I sometimes forget what life was like before we found each other. But then I silently watch as you work in the yard, sit at the computer, carry a grandchild on your shoulders, kneel to pray, cook an omlet and feel the spark of fire I felt years earlier. In the sunset of our years, as we walk hand and hand together I treasure our love. I find no fault in you and when I count my blessings, you are at the top of the list.
